Recently downloaded a relatively new word game for the iPhone - WordsWorth from 99Games.
If you like word games, you will enjoy WordsWorth. It is an easy to learn, fun, and addictive word game. The objective of the game is to trace words and link letters into words in the library. You play in stages where you earn points for each word found and, when you’ve accumulated enough points, you move on to the next level. Words can be formed using the touch screen by either tapping the letters one-by-one or by running your finger over them in succession. When a word is formed, those letters are removed and new ones fall into place.
Additional features include special powerup tiles that drop onto the board during play. Some tiles give you a scoring boost while others serve as "wild cards" that are equivalent to the blank letters on a Scrabble board. Finally, there are timed letters that will end your game if you don't use them quickly enough. And if you do get stuck, you can either shake your phone or touch the character Wordsworth's face to scramble the board (see screenshot above).
Generally, I'm not a huge fan of word games, but WordsWorth kept my attention for awhile and I enjoyed playing it. The game is well designed and simple to use but would be hard to master. I didn't mess with the settings too much but by looking at the options list you can make the game easier or more difficult depending on your skills. You can also keep track of your high scores so you can tell if, over time, your word making capabilities improve.
WordsWorth is the first word game I've played on the iPhone so I was curious where other word games are on the top sellers (paid apps) list. Looking at today's Top 100 list, it appears that there are two word games in the Top 100 list: Scrabble and wurdle. Scrabble is currently #17 on the top sellers list and is currently priced at $4.99 which in the description says is 50% off the regular price of $9.99. wurdle is #22 and is priced at $1.99. I'm sure most of you are familiar with Scrabble and looking at wurdle's description it appears to be similar to WordsWorth. That game was launched back in August so it may partially explain why it is selling better than WordsWorth right now.
WordsWorth is currently selling for $1.99 in the AppStore and it is well worth the price. 99Games has released a "Lite" version of the game as well that is similar in functionality but is limited to 3 levels instead of 20 on the "premium" version. If you like to try-before-you-buy go get the Lite version and try that out before dropping $2 on the full version.
